ITINERaRY PARADE OF SAIL
During the Parade of Sail you will pass through the Thames Barrier, towards the O2Arena with fantastic views of Canary Wharf. The route continues along by the Old Royal Naval College, the Royal Observatory, Greenwich Park and the Cutty Sark. You sail from the eastern to the western hemisphere and back, passing the 0 ° meridian. After you have passed the Cutty Sark, the ships will start forming the Parade of tall Ships. Your Tall Ship is participating in the largest Parade of Tall Ships on the majestic Thames in 25 years. After the start of the Parade you will sail in the Parade downstream until Margaretness limit. There will be an official salute to the Tall Ships at Maritime Greenwich and Woolwich. There you have a last goodbye to all the other Tall Ships and sail back to Woolwich where you will go back ashore.
The Check-in Process
The registration point is located at the right side of the Heritage Centre Building. Please make sure you arrive in good time at this point, which opens 30 minutes before departure. Boarding will commence directly after registration has closed. The ship will leave on time and unfortunately cannot wait. The address of Heritage Center is: Artillery Square, Royal Arsenal, London, SE18 6ST, please find a travel advice below.
The boarding area
Passengers will be guided per group per ship to embark at Royal Arsenal Pier, Woolwich. Please make sure you register first in the Heritage Center.
Ships
You will be aboard one of our fleet of Tall Ships. Which ship will be sailing, depends on how many tickets are sold per cruise. The capacity per ship varies between 20 and 150 people. Check our fleet here.
Daily a few ships will sail for the public cruises. The other ships are exclusively reserved and will sail for corporate hospitality. Public cruises will depart at different times than the corporate cruises.
For some cruises, passengers will travel in a single tall ship, but for many they will travel as a group. The exact route of the cruise may vary for safety and other reasons.
We will advise you which ship you will board when you receive your boarding pass at the registration point in Woolwich, 30 minutes before departure.
If you want to stick together as a group with friends or family, but you have booked tickets separate, please register together and mention you would like to go on the same ship. Then we will try to make sure you all will be on one ship.
Sailing or motoring?
Ships will be mostly motoring up and down the river as per the Thames regulations. However, we do have permission to raise sails if appropriate. We will do this as much as possible dependent on how many vessels reside on the Thames, weather circumstances and tidal period.
FIreworks
On all nights there will be a spectacular fireworks display. This will be lit from a pontoon on the Thames. On 4, 5, 7 and 8 september this will be lit from a pontoon near Royal Greenwich at around 9:15pm. On the 6th of september the fireworks will be lit near Royal Arsenal at around 9:45pm. All ships will stay on the river during this spectacle, so you have a magnificent view on the fireworks, the ships and the shore side and its spectators.
Box office collection: email confirmation = e-ticket
When you booked your tickets, you will receive a confirmation email including a PDF with travel information. This email holds a unique bar code. This is your e-ticket. Please print this email and bring it with you to the registration point on the day of departure when the ticket will be scanned.
When you register, you will be told which ship to board. When the ship is ready you will be gathered in groups for embarkation.
Accessibility information
Tall Ships are on average 80-100 year old ships with less facilities for disabled. Nonetheless, our piers and larger Tall Ships are accessible for disabled. Off course every ship has a toilet on board. At this early point in time we do not know which ship will sail at what time. Please announce you prefer a more accessible ship when you register in the reception area before boarding. We will try to arrange the most accessible ship that leaves at that moment. The ticket fee for disabled people is the regular ticket price.
Safety
- All ships are fully inspected by the British food and health inspection.
- Each captain has been fully trained on the Thames river and holds a PEC license (or there is a pilot on board).
- Each ship has its own full insurance, including for all the passengers.
- These ships are built for sailing on the open sea and so they are completely safe for sailing on the Thames. All ships meet international safety requirements set by MCA
- The Thames is a very calm river. Sea sickness is not likely as long as you don’t suffer from it.
- The event Sail Royal Greenwich has been licensed by Greenwich Council.
What should I wear during the trip?
You will be more comfortable onboard with flat shoes. High heeled shoes are not advised. There will be more breeze on board than on land, so do bring a light jacket or outer layer. Sun cream and a hat on hot days is recommended.
What is there to do if I arrive early and the registration point is not open yet?
The registration point opens 30 minutes before departure. If you arrive earlier, you can visit the Firepower Museum (Royal Artillery Museum) or the Greenwich Heritage Centre (free entrance). These attractions are on the same site as our registration area.
What happens in bad weather?
If it rains, passengers may shelter in the interior saloons or underneath the awnings on the outside decks.
In certain circumstances, for example fog or storms, the event will not take place. However, this is very unlikely at this time of year on the Thames. Find details on terms & conditions here.
What do I have to do when I am late or unable to attend?
All ships must leave on time, due to the Thames tides. If you are late and miss your trip, or are unable to attend, your ticket will be void. Please note that tickets are not transferable to another trip and are non-refundable.
